Persian Cat

Persian Cats are never demanding, they love to pose and will drape themselves in a favorite window or chair, enhancing the decor in much the same way as a treasured painting.  Persians tend to be accepting of other animals in the family.  The Persian is as well known for its temperament as for its beauty.  Perians Cats will bring love, warmth, and especially fun to your days!

The Persian is the most popular breed among the long-haired cats; others include Birman, Turkish Van, Ragdoll, Mayne Coon, Norvegian Forest Cat and the Exotic, ashort hair version of the Persian.  While the white Persian has long been the darling of photographers and advertisers, Persians come in an astonishing number of colors, which are divided into seven color divisions for purposes of competition.  The different color categories of Persians are: Silver,Golden, Shaded, Smoke, Tabby, Himalayan and Persian.

The Persian cat is one of the oldest breeds of cat .  Longhaired cats were imported to Britain and France from Asia Minor , Persia and Russia as early as the late 1500s , though there are indications that they appeared in Europe as early as 1300s due to the Crusades.  The Persian Cat was first seen outside their Asian home in 1884 , when the British Counsul-General in Bangkok , Edward Blencowe Gould (1847-1916), brought a breeding pair of the cats, Pho and Mia, back to Britain as a gift for his sister, Lilian Jane Veley. The Persian cat was once traded for goods and valued for its beauty and temperament, aiding the beautiful, longhaired cat s journey across the world.

The breed was originally established with a short (but not non-existent) muzzle, but over time this feature has become extremely exaggerated, particularly in North America, and Persians with the more extreme brachycephalic head type are susceptible to a number of health problems, specifically affecting their sinuses and breathing.    In 2007 the Persian Breed Standard was altered to reflect the flat face and it now states that the forehead, nose, and chin should be in vertical alignment.

Persians are particularly susceptible to a genetic disease which causes kidney failure, PKD, Polycystic kidney disease , among other diseases.  Persian Cats can now be DNA screened for the gene that causes PKD, so these affected cats are gradually being removed from the Persian gene pool by responsible breeders.

In Britain, it is called the "Longhair" or "Persian Longhair".  By the mid-1980s, cats of the original style had disappeared from cat shows, but a few breeders, particularly in the UK, continued to breed and register them, resulting in today's two types of Persians – the modern "show-style" Persian, and the "traditional" Persian, both descended from the same distant ancestors, but with few or no recent ancestors in common.  In the USA, there was an attempt to establish the Silver Persian as a separate breed called the Sterling, but it was not accepted and Silver and Golden longhaired cats, recognized by CFA more specially as Chinchilla Silvers, Shaded Silvers, Chinchilla Goldens or Shaded Goldens are judged in the Persian category of cat shows .  Partially due to such disagreements, there are several different names used for the cats.  The popularity of the older body style has also led to pointed mixed-breed cats that may have few or no Persian ancestors being sold as "Traditional Persian" to uninformed buyers, further increasing confusion over what a "real" Persian looks like.

Many people who love the breed but aren t interested in the amount of grooming it takes, or who suffer from allergies but still long for a Persian companion, opt for the lion cut for their feline friend.  To keep their fur in its best condition, they must be bathed regularly, dried carefully afterwards, and brushed thoroughly every day.

Today,Persians are one of the most popular breed of cats and is easily recognized, highly sought after, and greatly treasured by those who are fortunate enough to own one.  Persians, with  large round eyes, short snub nose, sweet facial expression, and small ears give it a highly neotenic appearance that will always be treasured .
