Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniel refers to two different breeds of dogs, both of which are commonly called simply Cocker Spaniel in their countries of origin: American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker Spaniel is respectful of its master's authority without much challenge. Bold and keen to work, the American Cocker Spaniel is equally suited to life as a gundog or as a household pet. Cocker Spaniels love everyone and need people to be happy.

Due to this breeds popularity one must be careful to choose a Cocker Spaniel from a reputable breeder; as some have reported Cocker Spaniels that have not had great temperaments and were not good with children. Cocker Spaniels with this type of temperament are not typical of the breed. Beware of poorly bred puppy-mill Cocker Spaniel as they may have bizarre temperamental changes and behavioral problems.

A good looking Cocker Spaniel has a sturdy, compact body and a cleanly chiseled and refined head, with the overall dog in complete balance and of ideal size. Cocker Spaniels are capable of considerable speed, combined with great endurance. Above all, Cocker Spaniels must be free and merry, sound, well balanced throughout and in action show a keen inclination to work.

Cocker Spaniels will do okay in an apartment if they are adequately exercised, and are fairly active indoors. Cocker Spaniels have plenty of stamina and need regular exercise. When walking a Cocker Spaniel, avoid brushy thickets that can tangle the coat. Others prefer to clip the coat of a Cocker Spaniel to medium length to be more functional. Either way, Cocker Spaniels will need regular trimming.

The popular Cocker Spaniel, sometimes called the American Cocker Spaniel, was originally developed from careful breeding of the English Cocker Spaniels brought to the United States. The name Cocker comes from the woodcock, a game bird these spaniels flushed particularly well. Today, the Cocker Spaniel serves primarily as a companion and glamorous show dog.

We highly recommend the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of New England, CSRNE is one of the oldest and largest Cocker Spaniel rescue groups in the country. It is composed of many volunteers throughout New England dedicated to rescuing and placing homeless Cocker Spaniel. Since its inception in 1987, hundreds of abandoned or unwanted Cocker Spaniel found homes with caring, loving families. By networking with animal shelters, other rescue groups, and veterinarians, CSRNE has saved, improved, and extended the lives of one of Americas most popular breeds.
